After months of quarantine, some local officials are deeming it safe to reopen. Others are in the early stages of preparing to resume business as usual\u200a\u2014\u200awell, as \u201cusual\u201d as business can be in these surreal times.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6154 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.reamaze.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/0_cPN9I4-m92BcLUph.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.reamaze.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/0_cPN9I4-m92BcLUph.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/blog.reamaze.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/0_cPN9I4-m92BcLUph-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.reamaze.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/0_cPN9I4-m92BcLUph-768x513.jpeg 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/534;\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Regardless of where your state is in the reopening process, it\u2019s a good idea to be proactive about your plans\u200a\u2014\u200athis way, you\u2019ll know what you\u2019ve got right, learn what you don\u2019t, and be able to fix what you can. Not to mention, by squaring away what you\u2019re sure about, you\u2019ll put yourself in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/347557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> better position to adjust<\/a> on the fly to anything unexpected in the current and post-pandemic world.<\/p>\n<p>Here are six tips for rebuilding your business after a pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Inventory your\u00a0assets<\/h2>\n<p>One of the first steps to take is to go over your company\u2019s assets with a fine-toothed comb. Appraise your workforce, capabilities, infrastructure, inventory, contacts, and any other resources you have left, while keeping in mind that you may have suffered some losses.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing where you stand will help you make strategic decisions going forward. It\u2019ll also help you identify any unnecessary assets you can sell off or discard so you can focus on what moves your company forward, instead of holding it back.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Evaluate your staffing\u00a0capacity<\/h2>\n<p>During the quarantine, you may have needed to transition your staff quickly to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/sustaining-and-strengthening-inclusion-in-our-new-remote-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> remote work<\/a>. If your company didn\u2019t already have work-from-home capabilities, this likely created a huge learning curve. You may even have been forced to lay off employees to get through the pandemic; if so, now\u2019s the time to think about how you might bring them back.<\/p>\n<p>Check in with your employees and see who\u2019s able to return, who\u2019s willing to work in-house, and who\u2019s flexible. Unfortunately, if you had to let some people go, albeit temporarily, you might find that some employees have moved on to other jobs. If that\u2019s the case, you might want to re-strategize staffing or start planning for new hires.<\/p>\n<p>Once your roster is organized, you\u2019ll want to be sure you can provide your staff enough personal protective equipment to go around. Studies have shown that employees who use hand sanitizer at least five times per workday are about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualitylogoproducts.com\/blog\/the-benefits-of-having-hand-sanitizer-at-the-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">67% less likely to get sick<\/a>. So invest in hand sanitizer, as well as hand soap, disinfectant wipes and sprays, and disposable masks, and make them all easily accessible.<\/p>\n<p>One important thing to remember when buying PPE: Not all hand sanitizers are created equal. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/coronavirus\/article244669172.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Some can be toxic<\/a> if absorbed through the skin, and the FDA has more than 100 such products on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-updates-hand-sanitizers-consumers-should-not-use#products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its \u201cdo not use\u201d list<\/a>. Check to make sure the product you\u2019re considering is safe and effective.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Examine your facilities<\/h2>\n<p>When it\u2019s time to pivot once again and bring things back online, your workforce and resources will likely need to be restructured. Social-distancing measures are still firmly in place, and, if you don\u2019t have enough physical workspace to accommodate everyone, you might need to rethink things. Here are some steps you can take:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prioritize what tasks can still be done remotely and identify who can perform them.<\/li>\n<li>Consider implementing staggered shifts and creative scheduling, where possible, to minimize contact among staffers in the office.<\/li>\n<li>Realign work spaces to accommodate 6 feet between workers, customers, vendors, and others entering your business. This may take some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigrentz.com\/blog\/dumpster-rental-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demolition and reconfiguration<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Install Plexiglas barriers, distancing signage, and other safety precautions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have customers coming into your store, let them know unequivocally that they\u2019ll need to be masked to comply with either your own requirements or government mandates. Make sure you\u2019re able to offer people a mask if they didn\u2019t bring one, so you neither lose their business nor sacrifice your commitment to safety.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Investigate new sales\u00a0channels<\/h2>\n<p>If your company relies heavily on one primary sales channel, it\u2019s time to think about diversifying. During the pandemic, as we\u2019ve seen, companies completely dependent on brick-and-mortar sales channels have struggled to stay afloat. Online retail orders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/louiscolumbus\/2020\/04\/28\/how-covid-19-is-transforming-e-commerce\/#792788ab3544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had grown at a staggering rate of 146%<\/a> just through April. Why not join the party and keep your business relevant? Consider these measures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Build your social media presence<\/strong>. Focus on specific platforms that best reach your market. And use only the ones you\u2019ll be able to keep active; stagnated social media profiles just look bad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establish an email distribution list.<\/strong> Keep your business present in customers\u2019 minds. You can offer percent-off coupons and other perks to customers who sign up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build a blog<\/strong>. Offer helpful tips, news about your pandemic response, operational or staff updates, or just fun items related to your audience\u2019s interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Network with like-minded professionals.<\/strong> You can pick the brains of colleagues in your industry to learn what works and doesn\u2019t in various sales channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adding new sales channels and building a strong e-commerce presence can help you retain customers while connecting with new audiences, too.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Find cost-cutting measures<\/h2>\n<p>Realistically, most companies need to scale back to keep their businesses financially solvent. Leave no stone un-turned when seeking opportunities to save. Eliminate waste and bloat in your budget wherever you can find it, and look for creative ways to trim costs.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, have you thought about investing in manual-transmission cars for your business needs? They\u2019re less expensive to insure, use a bit less fuel, and are less likely to be stolen. And they\u2019re great if you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thezebra.com\/resources\/driving\/how-to-drive-stick-shift-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training to drive commercial vehicles<\/a> or heavy equipment. If you or your employees don\u2019t know how to drive one, it\u2019s super easy to learn online.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Adapt workplace policies<\/h2>\n<p>As we all enter \u201cthe new normal,\u201d businesses will need to adopt new policies to fit in with a pandemic-informed world. Here are some steps you\u2019ll want to take:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set a plan to track virus cases in your workplace.<\/li>\n<li>Establish a way to do contact tracing so you can report to the proper agencies.<\/li>\n<li>Write a policy regarding PPE, outlining when and how certain measures will be utilized.<\/li>\n<li>Set safety expectations for yourself to share with employees.<\/li>\n<li>Outline any safety protocols you expect your employees to follow.<\/li>\n<li>Address any benefit changes, paid time off availability, and quarantine requirements (for those traveling or otherwise potentially exposed to the virus).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your employees\u2019 physical and mental health should be a priority (as well as customers and yourself, too!) when <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/04\/preparing-your-business-for-a-post-pandemic-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planning operations<\/a> for a post-pandemic existence.<\/p>\n<p>Reopening \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d in 2020 will be anything but usual.
